Loft Ventilation Calculator — How Much Ventilation Does My Loft Need?

Calculate eaves and ridge ventilation areas for your loft per BS 5250 and Approved Document C. Provides soffit vent and tile vent quantities as alternatives to continuous strips.

Length of roof along the ridge/eaves (plan dimension)

Width of roof eave to eave (plan dimension)

Angle of roof slope (must be >15° for these rules)

Cross-ventilation (eaves+ridge) is recommended

How We Calculate This

This calculator determines the required ventilation areas based on BS 5250 and Approved Document C requirements for cold pitched roof spaces. It then converts these areas into practical vent quantities.

Requirements (pitched roofs >15°)

  • Eaves + Ridge ventilation: 10mm continuous gap at eaves (10,000 mm²/m per side) + 5mm at ridge (5,000 mm²/m)
  • Eaves only: 25mm continuous gap at eaves (25,000 mm²/m per side)

The formula

Eaves vent area = Required gap (mm) × eaves length (m) × 1000 (mm/m) × 2 sides

Ridge vent area = 5mm × ridge length (m) × 1000 (mm/m)

Vent sizing

  • Typical rectangular soffit vent: ~10,000 mm² free area (250 × 70mm)
  • Typical tile vent: ~10,000 mm² free area
  • Circular soffit vent (70mm): ~3,848 mm² free area

The number of discrete vents is calculated by dividing the total required ventilation area by the free area per vent, rounded up.
