Acrow Prop Spacing Calculator — How Many Acrow Props Do I Need?
Calculate the number, spacing and size of Acrow props needed for temporary structural support when removing walls or installing steel beams.
Width of the opening being formed
Floor-to-ceiling height where props are installed
Load-bearing walls require closer spacing
Concrete floors = closer spacing
Number of floors above the opening
Strongboys for light loads; needles for heavy/multi-storey
How We Calculate This
This calculator determines the number of Acrow props, their spacing, and the correct prop size based on the opening width, wall type, floor type, and number of floors being supported. It also calculates needles, strongboys, and sole plates needed.
Spacing guidelines
- Load-bearing, timber floor: 600mm maximum centres
- Load-bearing, concrete floor: 450mm maximum centres
- Non-load-bearing: 900mm maximum centres
- Multiple floors supported: Reduce to 450mm or 300mm centres
Prop sizing
- Size 0: 1040-1829mm — Safe load 34 kN
- Size 1: 1753-3124mm — Safe load 25 kN
- Size 2: 1981-3352mm — Safe load 20.5 kN
- Size 3: 2591-3962mm — Safe load 17 kN
- Size 4: 3200-4877mm — Safe load 12 kN
Important notes
This calculator provides general guidance only. Temporary works design must be carried out or verified by a competent person (structural engineer or temporary works coordinator) in accordance with BS 5975 (Code of practice for temporary works procedures and the permissible stress design of falsework). Every structural alteration is unique and must be assessed individually.
Standards
Acrow prop use should comply with BS 5975 (Code of practice for temporary works) and BS EN 1065 (Adjustable telescopic steel props). The structural alteration itself requires Building Regulations approval and a structural engineer's design to comply with Approved Document A (Structure).
